My thoughts on Wordpress

08 August 2009

Generally, I've tried to steer clear of Wordpress. Personally, I don't see the point in it.

This week I had to look into it for a project at work and I don't see how anyone makes anything successfully using it, and more so anything managable!

I built this blog using PHP, MySql, HTML, CSS and blood sweat and tears. But it's satisfying. I know where everything is, what every function, method and class contributes to making the pages work.

Wordpress is a jumble of html, php and someone else's code. I've relatively successful built the 'theme' i need in a couple of hours, but what happens when I want to customise it further, have videos in a secific place etc etc. It doesn't seem overly straight forward, where as I could easily magic up that support on a site I had full control of.

Sure there are pluses to Wordpress. The admin area is great and has a fair amount in it, but it's just PHP - anyone can achieve something similar with practise and research.

I supoose what I'm trying to get at in this, well, rant is this: If you know how to use/write PHP - build something unique and not another churned out blog. If you don't know it - learn. There's a basic CMS tutorial that's fairly easy to follow and then tear apart once you know what's going on.

People of Earth - stop using wordpress/blogger and learn how to do it for yourself, I promise it'll be rewarding!
